Healthy eating

Eating a balanced diet when you have diabetes is important, in fact it's as important as taking your medication.

You should be aiming to eat a balanced diet of these four different food groups:

  • starchy foods
  • fruit and vegetables
  • dairy products
  • meat, fish, eggs and pulses

Exercise

Exercise is very important for you, but it also requires the correct balance of glucose and insulin, which needs to be carefully managed by you. It is always best to seek your doctor's advice if you wish to change your exercise routine significantly. If you have not exercised in a while, start off with small steps and progressively build it up. Set daily, weekly or monthly manageable goals to help change your routine which will then be easier to maintain.
 

Your blood glucose levels may be affected during and after exercise so checking your blood glucose regularly will help you to understand how to manage those levels and track any patterns.
